Phyno’s Biography

 

Synopsis:

Phyno (a stage name derived from the word ‘phenomenal’), originally named Azubuike Chibuzor Nelson, is an award-winning Nigerian rap artiste. Born in Enugu on 9 October 1986, he was best known for his rap in Igbo language. Phyno’s passion for music dated as far back as his secondary school days. By then he had already learned to play the guitar and piano. So with them, he would play his own version of the popular songs at the time. Though Phyno’s Childhood ambition was to become a pilot, he was always seen miming, acting and playing music. He had already been rapping since 2010. But he was not famous until he relocated to Lagos where he met other artistes with whom he did a number of collaborations. Meanwhile, he has been doing music since 2003. He has featured several notable artistes such as Olamide, Bracket, Flavour, Ruggedman, Chidinma, to mention just a few. For his rich music having a blend of Igbo, Pidgin and English, he has received numerous awards.

Phyno studied Public Administration at the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu.

Controversies:

In 2014, the rumour was widespread on social media that Phyno and Kcee were gay lovers. This came after a picture in which Phyno and Kcee were said to have kissed went viral with series of conflicting reactions from fans. The popular artiste later debunked the rumour. In his response, he mentioned how ludicrous it sounded for anyone to tag him gay saying that the same rumourmongers once accused him of impregnating a girl by the name Rita Edmond. An allegation he also denied in an interview with Punch newspaper in 2014.
