Yemisi May Odegbami popularly known as May7ven is an award-winning Nigerian music artiste, songwriter and dancer. She was born in Ibadan on 7 May 1984 but she grew up in the UK. When she was six, her mother a former athlete and an accountant, relocated to the UK. Her father, Segun Odegbami is a football Legend who had made Nigeria proud in several of his football outings for the country. At a tender age, Yemisi was passionate about dance and music. When she was 8, she was actively involved in her church choir, drumming and singing. At 14, she was already a good dancer that she was teaching children and young adult in her neighbourhood how to dance. She started her music career in 1997 as a backup vocal which she did for several notable musicians across the globe like Mary J Blige, Beverly Knight, Jamelia, to mention a few. The ‘Queen of Afrobeats’ as she has been crowned, has toured many popular cities across the world with her Afrobeats music and performance. During one of her performances for the Jacksons, the Nigerian-born Afrobeats star was able to wow Marlon Jackson who said that May7 reminded him of Janet Jackson. Her debut single titled Hands Up was released in the UK in 2008. A year later, she came out with another single ‘Take off My Clothes/Bo Aso Lara MI’ and it went viral enjoying a wide airplay, both in the UK and in Nigeria, winning her several awards and nominations. She is the first female to ever win Best Video in Europe award at the 2009 Nigeria Music Video Awards. Apart from presenting on several radio and TV stations, she had also been a judge for several television reality shows in Nigeria including the Malta Guineas Street Dance Africa. In addition, May 7 in May 2014 did a collabo with many popular Nigerian artistes in a single titled ‘Sistas Unite’, an effort geared towards creating awareness for the BringBackOurGirls campaign.
