Seyi Shey’s Biography
Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua, whose stage name is Seyi Shey, is a popular Nigerian music artiste and record producer. She was born in London, England on 21 December 1985. Her father is from Ife, Oshun State while her mother is from Northern Nigeria. She is the last of four children. All of them were raised by their single mother through whose influence Seyi Shey developed interest in singing. One of her Elder sisters used to write songs for the church and her mother was a chorister. In addition, her brother was a radio DJ. Little wonder, at the age of 6, Seyi was so passionate about music that she was already part of her secondary school choir. Seyi shuffles her time between England and Nigeria. Having completed her secondary education in Nigeria, she returned to England for her tertiary education. In England, she stunned the London Community in Japan with her performance during a World Tour. She was part of a band of five girls and when Beyonce came to the UK to perform during her I am World Tour, Seyi alongside the other girls backed up for her. She has also performed on stage alongside other notable artistes like Kelly Rowland, Tiwa Savage and D’banj. In 2011, Shay met Sound Sultan who encouraged her to relocate to Nigeria and pursue her music career there. Coming to Nigeria, Seyi Shay collaborated with Sound Sultan, Timaya, Vector, Olamide, Wizkid to mention a few. Today, Olwaseyi is a household name in the Nigerian music industry with several nominations at prestigious award ceremonies.

In 2015, Seyi Shay performed at the #MeetthePresident event organised in Lagos. During the event she was pictured sitting beside the then President Goodluck Jonathan. But her fans saw more than just the sitting, they were outraged by the nearly unclad bumper shorts and outfits she wore revealing her thighs and her side buttock. Many of her fans felt that she deliberately wore the outfit to seduce the President. She replied later that she was only a performer and that her stage act did not reflect the person she truly was. Also, in the same year, Seyi Shay organised a competition to create awareness for her ‘jangilover’ song. Fans were to record their favourite part of the song and upload it on her instagram profile. However, the matter soon got controversial when a fan by the instagram handle debbie_veren submitted a recording that received a whopping 18000 likes in no time. Shay would later come online to doubt the credibility of debbie’s entry. For this action, she was greatly criticised.
