Queen of Katwe is a Ugandan movie depicting the life of a Phiona Metusi, a young African woman raised by a single parent after losing her father to the dreaded disease plundering Africa, AIDS.
At age 9, the little girl dropped out of school when her mother could no longer afford her fees after losing her sister to an unknown disease.
The same year, she joined a chess school where she mastered the game unaware that was her introduction to fame.
Using winnings from games she played and won, Phiona made her way back to school at age 14.
For a sweet 16 present where most teenagers are thrown lavish parties by their parents, the teenager was accorded the title of Woman Candidate Master (WCW) along side Ivy Amoko, making them the first titled female players in Ugandan chess history.
In 2012, a book was published about Mutesi titled The Queen of Katwe: A Story of Life, Chess, and One Extraordinary Girl’s Dream of Becoming a Grand-master, by Tim Crothers.
The same year, Disney optioned the rights to the book and began work on the film.
The movie, Queen of Katwe, starring Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo premiered yesterday after it’s debut at the 2016 TIFF.
